Okashi

okashi

A generic Japanese word for sweets or snacks in general, used as an umbrella term over wagashi, yogashi, and dagashi alike.

Okashi (お菓子) is the everyday, generic Japanese word for sweets or snacks, roughly equivalent to “treats” in English. It sits above wagashi, yogashi, and dagashi as an umbrella term rather than naming a specific style or tradition; a convenience-store bag of potato chips and a hand-shaped seasonal wagashi sweet from a century-old shop are both, in ordinary conversation, simply okashi. The more specific terms only come into play when the distinction actually matters, such as describing a piece’s craft tradition, ingredients, or occasion.
